South African stand-up thrives in small rooms. In Cape Town, Ground Culture in Observatory seats 60 and runs weekly comedy nights, a bookshop down the road keeps a comedy show at the back of the shop, and Kloof Street and Shortmarket Street have their own weekly nights; in Johannesburg, a recording studio in Randburg hosts comedy on Thursdays and the Whirlwind Theatre in Delta Park brings it out each month; Durban's Not Quite Right open mic takes Wednesday nights on Florida Road. Each winter since 1997 the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival has played the Baxter Theatre, and at the Savanna Comics' Choice Comedy Awards, comedians vote for comedians.
D.O.C. lists 10 comedy rooms and nights in South Africa, in 4 cities — Johannesburg (3), Cape Town (4), Durban and Pretoria (2) — each with a dated show on its own listings when read on 4 October 2026. Below: each room's nights, its open mic and how comics get on, tickets and the age rule; the comedy on the road; the festivals and awards; and the 2 comedians SUCDb holds who came up in South Africa.
