Who Rhys Mathewson is

Rhys Mathewson is a New Zealand stand-up comedian who decided on a life in comedy after taking part in the NZ International Comedy Festival's Class Comedians programme at fifteen in 2006. Three years later his first solo show, The Best $18 You'll Ever Spend, won the festival's Best Newcomer award, and in 2010, at nineteen, he became the youngest winner of the Billy T Award; in 2016 he became the youngest winner of the Fred Award for the best New Zealand show.

He has performed overseas, including Chortle's Fast Fringe at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe, became a regular on 7 Days and The Project, hosted the festival's closing show in 2019, and won the Festival Director's Choice Award in 2024 with 10th Rodeo.
