Who Sammy J is

Sammy J is an Australian comedian, author, composer and broadcaster who dropped out of a law degree and won the Best Newcomer award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, then with puppeteer Heath McIvor formed the man-and-puppet duo Sammy J & Randy, whose show won the festival's Barry Award for Most Outstanding Show in 2010 and whose live shows have played the Sydney Opera House, London's West End and Montreal's comedy galas. The pair's musical sitcom Sammy J & Randy in Ricketts Lane premiered on ABC TV in 2015 and earned three AACTA nominations, his solo show Hero Complex won Best Comedy at the Melbourne Fringe, and his albums have received three ARIA nominations for Best Comedy Release.

He hosted the ABC Radio Melbourne breakfast show for five years, made the satirical series Playground Politics and weekly satirical sketches for ABC TV, and his tour Symphony in J Minor was recorded as a Paramount+ special at the Malthouse Theatre. His debut musical, Fiasco: A Burke & Wills Musical, won a 2026 Green Room Award and brought him the Melbourne Fringe's Living Legend Award in 2025, and since 2008 he has staged The 50 Year Show, one instalment every five years until 2058.
