Personal Storytelling
A true story is raw material. Stand-up storytelling is the edited version that serves the audience.
Truth is not structure
Real life contains traffic, introductions, irrelevant relatives, long pauses, and events that matter emotionally but do not help the joke. Keeping every fact because “that is what really happened” is one of the fastest ways to bury a good story.
The audience needs enough truth to understand the stakes, not a sworn deposition.
The audience does not need every true detail. It needs every detail required for the funny version to make sense.
Mining Childhood
Childhood gives you built-in characters, rules, misunderstandings, and a version of yourself who saw the world differently.
Write from the child's logic
Do not only describe what adults were doing. Remember what you thought they were doing. A child's explanation of money, marriage, school, religion, work, or neighborhood rules can contain strong comic logic because it is sincere and incomplete.
Nostalgia can open the door. Your point of view still has to do the comedy.
Relationships as Material
Relationships are universal material because two people can experience the same event and live in completely different realities.
Write the recurring pattern
One argument is a story. The pattern underneath it may be the bit: who apologizes first, how decisions get made, what each person believes “five minutes” means, how vacations expose incompatible definitions of relaxing.
The best relationship material usually reveals both people, including the comic.
Family as Material
Family gives you characters with decades of backstory—and decades of consequences if you use them carelessly.
Find the family rule nobody explains
Every family has unofficial systems: who gets called for emergencies, who arrives late, who controls holidays, what topic nobody mentions, how money is discussed, who fixes everything, who tells the same story.
These systems are often richer than isolated anecdotes because audiences recognize their own versions.
A family story should reveal a comic truth, not merely settle a family score.
