Karl Spain

Who Karl Spain is

Karl Spain is an Irish stand-up comedian and compère from Limerick who came to prominence in 2000, when RTÉ named him best new comedian. Established on the Irish and British circuits, he played the Irish show at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal in 2003, is a regular at Kilkenny's Cat Laughs festival, and took Love... Whatever That Is (2006), Life Is Sweet (2008) and A Time for Jokes (2015) to the Edinburgh Fringe.

On television he made the series Karl Spain Wants a Woman for RTÉ in 2005 and co-hosted Laughter in the Eyre with Anna Clifford, an hour-long stand-up special for RTÉ2 recorded in Galway's Eyre Square in 2019. A crowd-work specialist who builds his stories out of the audience, he also writes material for other comedians, and The Irish Times has called him 'criminally underrated'.
