The records

SUCDb: the Stand-Up Comedy Database.

The records D.O.C. runs on: who the comics are, the work they made, the era it landed in, where the rooms are and what has been checked — with the source and the date on each. People going out, comics and the people who book them read the same records, so a fix in one place shows everywhere.

2301comedians, each with a sourced profile

829on the road — a show still to come, listed on the room’s, the seller’s or their own page (the Comedy Calendar) →9eras of stand-up on the Legends ballots, with 93 comedians filed where their work landed →282clubs and 57 regular comedy venues in 50 states and D.C., with their nights, open mics and tickets →12rooms with a full night planned around them →

The comedians

Find a comedian. Follow the work.

Each profile carries its sources and the date it was checked, and comedians on the Legends ballots are filed under the era their work landed in — twelve per era. “On D.O.C.” marks a comic on a Legends ballot or D.O.C.'s touring list. Why isn't my favorite comedian here?

SUCDb follows stand-up and the comedy that grows straight out of it. Someone missing may not have a record yet, may be mostly another kind of comedian, or may be a host whose monologue work only overlaps stand-up. Missing does not mean rejected: new records come in as each one is written up and sourced. Who gets a record, and why a famous name may not be one →

Milestones

The stadium era

The biggest crowds, the first comedians into stadiums, ballparks and live streaming, and the tours that sold the most — each in its source's own terms, with the date D.O.C. read it. A record is a world record its source documents as a measurable best; a first, a documented first at that room or platform; a milestone, a big achievement short of a world record — one venue's own record among them.

“Why isn't this person in SUCDb?”

Who gets a SUCDb record

SUCDb is a database of stand-ups and the comedy that grows straight out of stand-up. A famous funny person with no record here has usually taken another road into comedy — improv, sketch, acting, writing — and some are stand-ups whose record isn't written yet. Here is one route SUCDb does not count, as the person's own history gives it.

ExampleChris Farley

Main roadImprov and sketch

The routeArk Improv Theatre, Madison → The Second City's touring company, then its Mainstage (1989) → SNL (1990) → films

In SUCDb?No — a major comedy figure, not a career stand-up

The same way of looking tells a stand-up who later acts from an actor who later tries stand-up, a monologue host from a touring comic, and a comedy writer from someone whose career is live stand-up. The Launching Pads show the stand-ups who did come through Saturday Night Live, The Second City and the rest.

“Every famous comedian started in stand-up.” “Comedian” is a bigger category than “stand-up comedian.” Sketch, improv, acting, radio and writing have produced major comedy careers without a stand-up career first. That matters here because SUCDb is a stand-up database, not a list of every funny person who ever became famous.

“If you’re funny, you should be able to write a sitcom.” Stand-up writing, sketch writing, monologue writing and scripted television writing overlap, but they are not the same job. Mitch Hedberg made a joke of Hollywood’s version on his 1999 Comedy Central special: “Can you act? Can you write? Write us a script.” To him it was like telling someone who worked hard to become a good cook, “All right, you’re a cook… Can you farm?”Being great at one comedy craft doesn’t make anyone lesser for not being great at the others.

“Writers are behind the scenes. Performers are onstage.” Comedy history is full of writers who became performers, performers who wrote their own material, and people who moved back and forth. Mike Myers wrote and performed in The Second City’s revues before SNL.For somebody trying to get into comedy, “writer first” is a real career path — not a consolation prize.

“SNL cast members are basically stand-ups.” Some absolutely are. Others came through improv, sketch, acting, writing or a mix of them. SNL is a sketch-comedy institution, not a certificate that everybody in the cast had the same training. So SUCDb shows the road each person actually took, instead of turning everybody into a stand-up after the fact.

“A late-night monologue is just stand-up.” It can look like stand-up: one person telling jokes to a live audience. But a television monologue can involve a staff of writers, a daily news cycle, rehearsal, producers and a format built for the show. That is why a late-night host is not counted as a stand-up here unless their own career says so, and why the Launching Pads name hosts apart.

What goes in, and what never does

The rules the records are kept by. They are what makes one set of records safe to share between a fan, a comic and a booker.

A fact goes in with its sourceThe page it came from travels with it. Where there is no source, the record says so rather than sounding sure.

A check carries its dateTours end and rooms close. A record says when it was last checked, so an old one reads as old.

The comic's word outranks oursOnce submissions open, a comic can claim their record on Your SUCDb record and correct, extend or withdraw what is said about them. Their version wins.

No fee without the performerA rate appears only if the performer approved it; otherwise it is quote-only. D.O.C. never estimates what somebody charges.

No fan is shown unless they signWhat you pick stays with you. Nothing here puts a fan's name or whereabouts in front of a comic or a venue — except what you choose to sign on a Thanks for the Laughs note: a first name, the initial of your last, and where you saw them. Never a full name, and never contact details.

Wrong is one line to fixA club moves, a mic stops running. A record that is wrong gets fixed at the source, and the fix shows on every page that reads it. Seen something wrong? Tell D.O.C. on Corrections and contact; if the record is yours, claim it on Your SUCDb record. The same two links sit at the foot of a record.
